AI Is Now the Top Reason for US Layoffs

AI is now the most-cited reason for announced US job cuts in 2026, even as total cuts are down 39% on last year.

Employers have attributed 120,136 US job cuts to AI so far in 2026 — about 21% of all announced cuts and the leading single reason this year. Overall announced cuts are down 39% on the same period of 2025 (573,195 vs 946,426). In September alone, AI accounted for 3,961 of 43,281 cuts (~9%).
